CLP Boosts Access for Territory Hunters

NT Government

The CLP Government is delivering on its commitment to restore the Territory lifestyle by improving access for recreational hunters at the Harrison Dam Conservation Area (Reserve).

Access upgrades to the previously restricted southern section of the Reserve are now complete, with access restrictions that were in place for safety reasons to be lifted in time for the weekend.

This improved access opens up new opportunities for hunting activities including waterfowl and pig hunting and supports broader conservation efforts.

Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries, Gerard Maley, highlighted the CLP Government's focus on delivering practical outcomes for Territorians.

"This is a clear example of our commitment to restoring the iconic Territory lifestyle," he said.

"Expanding access at Harrison Dam reflects the CLP Government's promise to provide more opportunities for recreational hunters."

The Reserve, located on the Arnhem Highway about 65km from Darwin CBD, attracts around 9,000 visitors annually, mainly during the waterfowl hunting season.

The crossing isn't designed for year-round access but will improve accessibility to the southern areas of the Reserve for waterfowl and pig hunting from late July or early August annually, depending on rainfall.

Minister for Parks and Wildlife, Marie-Clare Boothby, described it as a win for both recreational hunters and conservation efforts.

"We know hunting is a valued activity for many Territorians, and this work not only improves access for hunters, but also supports weed and feral animal management, ensuring the Reserve is well maintained," she said.

"Greater access to southern parts of the Reserve means the Territory is ready to welcome more of the hundreds of thousands of hunters and shooters nationwide, to join the NT's recreational hunters and strengthen Harrison Dam as a self-sustaining tourism attraction.

"By improving access, we are ensuring the Reserve can be enjoyed safely and sustainably by all visitors."

Starting Saturday, November 23, 2024, normal hunting access hours will resume at Harrison Dam:

November - Hunting is permitted between 5.50am and 7.15pm.December to 6 January - Hunting is permitted between 5.50am and 7.30pm.

Waterfowl hunting is permitted during the season between September 2024 and 6 January 2025, while pig hunting is available year-round, with permits required for all activities.
