The Finocchiaro CLP Government has welcomed Airnorth's announcement of direct flights between Alice Springs and Cairns, in a major boost for Alice Springs residents, businesses and tourism operators.
The service will operate three times a week using Airnorth's modern Embraer E190 jet fleet, which seats 100 passengers.
Minister for Trade, Business and Asian Relations Robyn Cahill said the new service would add more than 30,000 seats between Alice Springs and Cairns annually.
"As international visitation continues to recover this route is strategically important to the Northern Territory tourism sector and expands itinerary options that connect Central Australia and Far North Queensland," she said.
"With Perth's growing profile as an international gateway into Australia from UK, Europe and South Africa, the route could support development of new inbound Australian itineraries that include Perth, Central Australia and Far North Queensland.
"Similarly, the route will make it easier for Japanese visitors to disperse from Cairns to Alice Springs."
Ms Cahill added: "Alice Springs is a strong and resilient community, and our CLP Government has shown we are dedicated to rebuilding and supporting the region."
Minister for Tourism and Hospitality, Marie-Clare Boothby, said: "This route between Alice Springs and Cairns fills a critical gap for international travellers."
"It showcases our commitment to making the Northern Territory more accessible and attractive as a world-class destination, which will not only drive tourism and economic activity, but also help us continue our commitment to restoring our Territory lifestyle," she said.
Danial Rochford, Chief Executive Officer for Tourism Central Australia, said: "The tourism industry warmly welcomes this announcement that will open up new opportunities to connect two key tourism hotspots. The new service will deliver real economic opportunities for our industry, our region and the Northern Territory more broadly."
Daniel Bowden, CEO of Airnorth, said: "We are thrilled to expand our network with the addition of the Cairns to Alice Springs service. This route connects key regions of Australia, facilitating economic growth and creating opportunities for tourism and businesses."
Rob Porter, Executive General Manager, Airports for Airport Development Group, said: "We are proud to support Airnorth in delivering this important route and deeply appreciate the support of the Northern Territory Government through the Territory Aviation Attraction Scheme (TAAS) funding."
