Background
Last night the CLP Government passed the Territory Coordinator Bill. The cross-bench and Labor put forward a number of amendments based on recommendations from the 302 submissions from the public to the Scrutiny Committee. All but 2 of these submissions opposed the Territory Coordinator Bill. The amendments were aimed at increasing the integrity standards of the Coordinator, reducing the risks of severe environmental harm, protecting the lands of Traditional Custodians, and safeguarding key democratic processes.
Quotes As put by Kat McNamara
"This Bill gives wide-sweeping powers to an unelected official, with very little oversight or transparency mechanisms in place to keep the Coordinator accountable."
"The crossbench and Labor attempted to make amendments that were aimed at increasing the integrity standards of the Coordinator, reducing the risks of severe environmental harm, protecting the lands of Traditional Custodians, and safeguarding key democratic processes."
"The CLP Government not only rejected these amendments, but voted against 15 of the 25 of the recommendations laid out by its own members of the Scrutiny Committee"
"This reversal illustrates the CLP doesn't care about genuine scrutiny and demonstrates their willingness to erode Government accountability measures."
"This is a dark day for democracy."
"It is clear that the CLP Government has no desire to listen to the voices of everyday Territorians. They do not care what destruction is done to our natural environment or to communities in the pursuit of appeasing their big business donors."
