We recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine (SNRIU) to formalize efforts to cooperate and exchange information on nuclear regulatory matters. The agreement was signed in Kyiv on August 15, 2023, by CNSC President Rumina Velshi and SNRIU Acting Chairman and Chief Inspector on Nuclear and Radiation Safety, Oleh Korikov.
The MOU serves as a framework to enhance collaboration and exchange of information to strengthen nuclear safety. It is intended to support the stabilization of nuclear safety in Ukraine through technical collaboration and exchanges. It will also assist in the eventual recovery efforts in Ukraine and potential preparations to regulate small modular reactors.
"Being in Kyiv and signing this MOU with my counterpart, Oleh Korikov, has been very meaningful," said President Velshi. "The Ukrainian regulator, which has faced enormous challenges during this time of conflict, has the CNSC's unequivocal support. Our actions are as necessary as our words in delivering that support," she added.
A solid base for regulatory collaboration
We collaborate with partners around the globe both multilaterally and bilaterally to strengthen nuclear security and non-proliferation at home and abroad. Multilaterally, the CNSC and SNRIU are members of international organizations, including the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Nuclear Energy Agency.
The MOU was established to grow the bilateral relationship between the CNSC and SNRIU, focusing collaboration on organizational priorities.
