Southern Grampians Shire Council has started construction of a 170-metre sub-surface drainpipe along a section of Church Street in Coleraine.
The pipe, which is being installed on the south-side of Church Street from Laidlaw Street to just before Gage Street, will help prevent the road pavement from softening after prolonged periods of rain.
Director of Infrastructure and Sustainability Marg Scanlon said council had allocated $28,000 in the 2023/24 budget to carry out the work.
"Water enters the road pavement from different sources, the main one being a subsurface stream coming down a hill from the south," explained Ms Scanlon.
"The installation of a subsurface drainage system will prevent the stream and other water reaching the pavement".
Residents should expect works to be active for a two-week period, weather permitting.
Pedestrian and traffic management arrangements will be in place around the works for everyone's safety.
