Coming Together For International Women's Day

Stonnington proudly supports International Women's Day (IWD), celebrating women's achievements and acknowledges strategies, resources and activities that positively impact women's advancement.

Every year, (IWD) is celebrated globally on 8 March to acknowledge the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women – while also marking a call to action to accelerate gender equality.

This year's IWD theme is 'accelerate action', focusing on speeding up progress towards gender equality and asking us to step forward in solidarity.

This year also commemorates 30 years since the United Nations' Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. UN Women Australia is acknowledging this milestone with the theme: 'March forward! It's time to turn promises into progress'.

Our first event in the lead up to IWD is Conversations that matter: an evening of connection for women. This dedicated women-only workshop invites women to come together to unpack the history, expectations and important statistics of being a woman, including the issues that they face every day.

Facilitated by Tomorrow Woman, this free two-hour workshop will be held at the Banquet Hall, Malvern Town Hall on Wednesday, 5 March from 5.30pm to 8pm. Light dinner and refreshments provided. Learn more or register to attend.

The Hotel Chadstone will once again be the location of the annual Women in Business Breakfast on Wednesday, 6 March from 7.15-9.15am (tickets $100). Local Stonnington female business owners, employees, and entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to be inspired and network with like-minded female employees and managers at the annual business breakfast featuring keynote speaker, Jamila Rizvi. Learn more about the breakfast.

By hosting these events, we continue to accelerate action and march forward to support women in their everyday lives, build business connections and develop strategies and plans, such as the Gender Equality Action Plan and the Fair Access Policy, that champion gender equality.

Released in June 2024, The Fair Access Policy aims to address known barriers experienced by women, girls and gender-diverse people in accessing and using community sports and active recreation infrastructure, sports grounds and facilities.

In addition to the events, we have developed resources for the City of Stonnington Community Health and Wellbeing webpage, 'Equal, respectful and safe', that provide information and support services for women.
