Commissioner Rules on Pet Requests, Minor Changes

REIWA

Consumer Protection has published recent rulings in relation to requests for pets and minor modifications at rental properties. These rulings, made over the past six months since the introduction of WA's new rent reforms, provide valuable insights into how decisions are reached under the updated regulations.

By publishing these decisions from the new Commissioner determinations process, Consumer Protection aims to help property managers, landlords and tenants understand the factors considered when assessing requests. This transparency helps ensure all parties are better informed about their rights and responsibilities under the new laws.

All identifiable information has been removed from the published decisions, and new determinations will be added periodically.

Commissioner guidelines for keeping pets in a rental home

In addition, a comprehensive set of guidelines is now available to help tenants, landlords and property managers understand:

  • What steps each party is responsible for taking in the process.
  • How the Commissioner decides if a pet is permitted.
  • What factors the Commissioner considers when deciding whether a landlord's condition is reasonable.

Determinations process customer satisfaction survey

Consumer Protection wants to hear from property managers, tenants and private landlords on their experience with the determinations process.

If you have been involved in the process, you will be sent an email to complete a customer satisfaction survey to provide your feedback on the process, the decision issued and your experience.
