Western Australians are being called upon to "think small first" and shop with small businesses today as part of WA Small Business Day.
WA Small Business Day recognises and celebrates the impact of small businesses on communities and local economies, encouraging consumers to make a conscious choice about purchasing from a small business.
In Western Australia, small businesses account for nearly 97 per cent of businesses - with 24 per cent located in the regions.
There are more than 238,000 small businesses across industries ranging from construction to retail, health care to arts and recreation services.
WA's small business industry contributes $50.1 billion to the State's economy, and is one of WA's largest employers in the private sector.
The Cook Government recognises the importance of this sector by providing tailored services for small businesses through the Small Business Development Corporation (SBDC).

As stated by Small Business Minister Jackie Jarvis:
"Small businesses are at the heart of our communities across Western Australia and make a huge contribution to diversifying our economy and providing essential goods and services.
"I encourage all Western Australians to put their spending power behind small businesses, not just today on WA Small Business Day but wherever possible.
"Buy from your local butcher or grocer, purchase your gifts from a local book store and grab a coffee from the local caf.
"And if you operate a small business - thank you for the contribution you make to your community and our State."
As stated by Small Business Commissioner David Eaton PSM:
"Western Australians have an entrepreneurial spirit, with many of us self-selecting to be our own boss. This choice offers a huge amount of freedom, but also responsibility.
"It's important that we as consumers back the small businesses in our local areas, so we can enjoy their unique goods and essential services well into the future.
"If you are a WA small business owner, please seek the guidance and advice offered by the SBDC throughout our State, to help your business start well, survive and thrive."

"On WA Small Business Day, we reflect on the enormous and varied contributions small businesses make throughout regional WA.
"The quarter of WA small businesses located throughout our regional communities are so much more than the goods and services they offer. They add vibrancy and liveability to each community and are often the beating heart of what makes our regional places so special to live in.
"They also provide employment, support all sorts of community events and activities, and volunteer for essential community services.
"I hope that on Saturday 26 October and beyond, we can give back to them by thinking small first and give our business to a small business."
