Community Facilities Infrastructure Strategy Adopted

Mornington Peninsula Shire Council adopted the Community Facilities Infrastructure Strategy 2024 - 2034 on Monday 9 September. The Strategy sets a clear direction for the future of the Shire's community facilities.

The Strategy outlines principles to guide the planning, design and operation of community facilities. With around 250 community facilities owned and maintained by the Shire, many of which were built in the 1960s and 70s, the Strategy will ensure our facilities evolve to serve the growing and changing needs of the community.

A key outcome of the Strategy will be the development of infrastructure action plans for each township. These plans will assess existing community facility provision and identify the best way to meet the needs of the local community. This may include:

  • exploring different management models
  • investigating new approaches to deliver Shire services
  • consolidating existing facilities
  • repurposing or selling outdated buildings (where appropriate).

With the focus on modern, adaptable facilities like the Flinders Civic Hall, the Strategy aims to support many types of user groups while ensuring long-term financial sustainability. By prioritising multipurpose spaces, we will better serve the whole community.

Quote attributable to Mayor Councillor Simon Brooks:

"The Community Facilities Infrastructure Strategy provides Council with the strategic framework to create, support and maintain a network of community facilities that effectively and equitably meet the community needs now and into the future.

"The development of the Strategy involved extensive community consultation, including feedback from more than 90 facility users and local groups. Our community's input has been instrumental in shaping a plan that reflects the needs and aspirations of our community."
