Green thumbs in community organisations and Local Government Authorities (LGAs) can now apply for grants of up to $10,000, as part of the State Government's Community Garden Grants Program (Program).

As a result of significant community interest, the Cook Government has increased this year's Program funding from $100,000 to $300,000 to ensure more applicants will be able to benefit.

Grants provided through the Program support the establishment and development of sustainable and edible community gardens across Western Australia.

Community Garden projects encourage communities to come together, establish relationships as neighbours, connect to their environment and develop and share their skills.

Eligible community organisations and LGAs can use the funding for a range of garden-related items and initiatives from plants, seedlings, and fertiliser to planning, design, and training services.

Successful applicants will demonstrate that their project encourages participation of the wider community and is a feasible and sustainable project.

64 projects across Western Australia were funded under the 2023 Program, including:

  • $9,972 for Incredible Edible Broome to hold workshops to increase skills in food security and food waste management;
  • $7,650 for the Boddington Community Resource Centre to develop a native bush tucker garden in partnership with the Aboriginal community and local volunteers;
  • $9,944 for the Hopetoun Community Resource Centre to establish the Youth Earth Keepers Initiative - a youth-led community garden and green waste recycling program, envisioned as a hub of inclusivity, sustainability, and community engagement; and
  • $8,000 for the Milligan Community Learning and Resource Centre to run Homegrown Community Garden workshops accessible to people who have newly moved to Australia.

Applications close on Wednesday, 21 August 2024.

As stated by Community Services Minister Sabine Winton:

"Community gardening is a great way for people to become active and develop relationships with like-minded people.

"It connects people with the healthy produce that they grow, fosters sustainable practices like composting, and encourages the development of new skills.

"I am proud that the Cook Government has increased the funding amount for this year's grants. This will ensure more communities can build upon the benefits provided by community gardening.

"I encourage all eligible community organisations and Local Government Authorities to consider applying for these grants."
