Eleven organisations from across Tasmania will share in a total of $50,000 funding from Round Two of the 2023-24 Teddy Sheean VC Memorial Grants Program.
Minister for Veterans' Affairs, Guy Barnett, said that these grants serve to support local communities while preserving an important legacy.
"The Teddy Sheean VC Memorial Grants Program was established as a tribute to the bravery and sacrifice made by Tasmanian sailor Edward 'Teddy' Sheean, who gave his life for his country and fellow shipmates during a battle in 1942 off the coast of East Timor," Minister Barnett said.
"The Grants Program honours Teddy Sheean VC as a representative of the many Tasmanians who selflessly gave their lives for others in the defence of this country.
"I am proud we can continue to honour his memory and ensure that his spirit of mateship, courage and service can be everlasting."
Funding was available for minor capital works, tools and/or equipment purchases, a welfare initiative as well as war memorial construction, repair and maintenance.
Some of the projects to receive funding include:
- Deloraine Ex-Services & Citizens Club - $6,300 for Carpet Refurbishment;
- Glenorchy City Council - $5,000 for Repair and Maintenance to the Glenorchy First World War Memorial;
- Sheffield RSL Sub Branch Inc – $6,000 for upgrade of the Kitchen Floor;
- Westbury RSL Sub Branch Inc – $2,094 for upgrade of Cash Register and Point of Sale equipment; and
