Bega Valley Shire Council has endorsed a proposal to extend the Stage 1 Community Housing Assistance Agreement with Southern Cross Community Housing (SCCH) and Homes NSW.
The agreement was initially entered into in November 2022 as part of the divestment of the Narira Village Complex in Cobargo.
Council's Director Business and Governance, Iliada Bolton, said as part of the sale, Council agreed to contribute its proceeds to SCCH for an additional affordable housing project in the shire.
"Homes NSW played a facilitative role, providing assurance to Council the project can be delivered and provide long-term community housing benefits," she said.
"The extension of the Stage 1 Community Housing Assistance Agreement will give SCCH more time to complete its Rawlinson Street, Bega development.
"The development includes the demolition of a house and the construction of a mixed residential development comprising 28 flats, 21 multi-dwelling houses and two boarding houses.
"SCCH is the only large, registered community housing provider in the shire and maintaining strong, collaborative relationships with both SCCH and Homes NSW is crucial for advancing social and community housing initiatives here.
"SCCH requested additional time to progress the development due to the time required for the development application process, progressing a tender and the minimum 12 months needed for construction.
"A three-year extension was agreed."
