Community Supporting Community

Kempsey Shire Council

I've found over the years that if you ask anyone in Kempsey Shire what they love about the area, one of the first things they say is "the people."

Whether we're celebrating, or doing it tough, our community is quite simply remarkable. As such I thought I'd remark on two great community initiatives this week.

16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM

Kempsey Shire Council has a deep commitment to the 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence project. All across the community at the moment, you can see businesses, volunteer organisations and Council itself participating in this important initiative.

We are all banding together on this important issue with so much happening. From the yarn bomb down at Kempsey Post Office, to the clothesline project on Smith St, it is incredible to see so many people sharing their experiences and wanting to see change when it comes to this issue.

So stand together with our community to put a stop to violence against women.

BIG DAY OUT

This is always a special day on our calendar. This free festival is held on a Friday each year so support workers are available for an incredible day of entertainment, activities, and celebration of inclusivity and diversity.

Council is proud to be a supporting partner of this year's Big Day Out, presented by the Macleay Disability Inclusion Group with the support of generous sponsors, who share the commitment of creating an inclusive and welcoming community for all.

From silent discos to a petting zoo, face painting to live music, this event underscores our commitment to fostering inclusion for all ages and abilities, improving the lives of people with disabilities, and raising awareness of their contributions to our community.

As we celebrate International Day of People with Disability, this is a moment to honour resilience, encourage positive attitudes, and build a future where everyone feels supported and valued.

NOMINATE A COMMUNITY HERO

Our people are indeed awesome, and we love to recognise this. That's why we've extended nominations for a few extra days for the Australia Day Awards. So if you are reading this before Monday and you know an awesome local, get nominating at www.ksc.pub/ausday
