Queenslanders are being asked to provide feedback on options for one of Australia's biggest eco-parklands to be transformed at Currumbin.
Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development Steven Miles said a range of options have been identified for the Currumbin Eco-Parkland and were available for comment online from today.
"We listened to the community and they asked us to protect and preserve this beautiful property and protect its koala habitat and local flora and fauna," Mr Miles said. "This is why we secured 148 hectares of land at Currumbin to transform it into one of Australia's biggest eco-parklands.
"The community can now view and comment on our shared vision for this amazing part of the Gold Coast."
Mr Miles said the options plan will be available for comment until January 31, 2022, and interested members of the community will have the chance to attend in person consultation sessions in February and March 2022.
"The plans we've released today show ideas that could be delivered on the site over the next 10-15 years," Mr Miles said. "We are delivering on an election commitment to the local community and we want to make sure we get it right and deliver the things the community most want to see. "The options plan include recreational facilities such as 17 kilometres of walking trails and a mountain biking skills precinct. "Other ideas that are being tested include a recreation and education precinct, which could be used for school camps as well as picnic areas, bird-hides, barbecue facilities, multiple lookouts, an information kiosk and a café. "It's also important for us to consider native forest rehabilitation and revegetation; wetlands and waterways and what the community thinks about a koala rehabilitation facility. "This is not just about protecting land but improving it. We now have an enormous opportunity to create something special." Feedback provided during this consultation phase will be used to inform the finalisation of a master plan and identify the first stages of the parkland development.
