- Key project to fill missing link on Mitchell Freeway Principal Shared Path now complete
- New 3.7 km shared path runs from Civic Place to Reid Highway
- Removing gaps in the PSP network within a 15 km radius of the CBD a key priority of the Western Australian Bicycle Network Plan
- Project funded as part of a record investment of $347 million in walking and riding infrastructure
Construction of the Mitchell Freeway Principal Shared Path (PSP) between Civic Place and Reid Highway is now complete.
Transport Minister Rita Saffioti today opened the new 3.7 km, four-metre-wide path which runs southbound along the eastern side of Mitchell Freeway, linking Civic Place in Stirling to Reid Highway in Balcatta.
The $23.4 million project delivers a critical missing link along the primary route and further improves connectivity between the Perth CBD and the northern suburbs.
Included as part of the project was construction of a new 75 metre underpass at Karrinyup Road. It features bespoke artwork and improves safety for people who walk, ride or wheel along the route by eliminating the need for them to interact with traffic at the busy location.
The project also saw an upgrade to the Erindale Road underpass, with a new artwork installation painted by students from Lake Gwelup Primary School.
This development follows on from the 2020 Hutton Street to Glendalough Station shared path, which saw a 50 per cent increase in active travel trips post construction.
In the coming years, a number of other projects will close the remaining gaps in the Mitchell Freeway PSP. This includes the Stephenson Avenue extension, which will close the gap between Civic Place and Telford Crescent.
The completion of the PSP as part of the Stephenson Avenue Extension Project will mean people walking, wheeling or riding will now have a continuous link along the Mitchell Freeway between Perth's CBD and Reid Highway.
Removing gaps in the PSP network within a 15 km radius of the CBD is a key priority of the Western Australian Bicycle Network Plan.
A significant program of work to revegetate along the new route will commence in June, with around 230 native trees and 25,000 native shrubs and bushes to be planted.
As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:
"Our Government is investing record amounts into our walking and cycling infrastructure and this project to connect Civic Place and Reid Highway, is another major milestone in delivering a better-connected Principal Shared Network for our city.
"Completing this project is another step towards having an uninterrupted PSP network connecting our city to the northern suburbs along the Mitchell Freeway.
"Our principal shared paths are vital to encourage people of all ages and abilities to give riding a go and thanks to record investment in expanding walking and riding infrastructure, this is becoming increasingly possible."
As stated by Balcatta MLA David Michael:
"This new 3.7 km section is one of the critical missing links along the Mitchell Freeway, and I know this will be welcome news to many commuters who use the network to walk, wheel or ride to and from the city.
"When the Stephenson Avenue extension is complete, commuters will have an uninterrupted Mitchell Freeway PSP all the way from the city to Reid Highway."
