The Tasmanian Liberal Government today congratulates Rugby Australia on the successful announcement overnight that they have secured the hosting rights for the 2027 Men's and 2029 Women's Rugby World Cups.
Confirmation of the result comes after many years of work by Rugby Australia, its Member Unions, the Australian Government & all State and Territory Governments.
To acknowledge this achievement, Classic Wallaby Lote Tuqiri and Classic Wallaroo Sharon O'Kane joined Ebony Altimira, President of Tasmanian Rugby, in Tasmania at a rugby clinic for kids on Parliament House lawns this morning.
This is a fantastic result for Australia, securing the world's third biggest sporting tournament behind the Olympics and FIFA World Cup.
It is anticipated the tournament will be a significant boost for tourism with many visitors travelling from across the globe to attend and adding substantial economic impact.
This will also be a great boost for rugby across Australia including in Tasmania and obviously great for our local rugby union competition, players, supporters and for Tasmanians in general.
During the 2003 tournament, Tasmania successfully hosted a group game in Launceston which was a sell-out and heavily supported by the people of this State, who followed the the two teams, Romania and Namibia.
The Tasmanian Liberal Government has had an excellent track record in recent years successfully attracting elite sporting codes to the State including the Ashes cricket and the great grand final making inaugural year of the Tasmanian JackJumpers in the National Basketball League.
Rugby Australia and World Rugby will continue to work with the Tasmanian Government around the State's interest in securing content and providing support for hosting match content, venues and a Legacy program.
The final decision on host cities is determined in partnership with World Rugby and Rugby Australia and will be announced at a later date.
