Congress Delegation to Visit Georgia Feb. 3-4

Council of Europe

The aim of the mission is to assess the difficulties faced by local authorities in the light of the current political situation and discuss the organisation of local elections in Georgia scheduled for October 2025, to ensure that they are held in compliance with international standards for democratic elections.

Congress President Marc Cools, President of the Chamber of Regions Cecilia Dalman Eek and President of the Chamber of Local Authorities Bernd Vöhringer, accompanied by Secretary General Mathieu Mori, will meet Georgian local authorities of all main political parties, representatives of civil society and the international community, as well as relevant officials in the Central Election Commission, the Public Defender's Office and the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure.

In view of the forthcoming local elections, the Congress President has asked for an opinion of the Venice Commission on the recent proposed amendments to the Electoral Code which could weaken, within municipal councils, the proportional system and favour the majority.
