A career in mental health offers a diverse range of opportunities. It can be incredibly rewarding, with different roles and work environments to suit different skillsets and training.

There is no one type of person suited to a career in mental health, and there is demand for people from all backgrounds and qualifications. A mental health professional can be:

  • a peer support worker helping patients recovering from addiction using their with lived experience of mental ill-health
  • a clinical psychiatrist working in an emergency hospital setting, using their professional training to diagnose and treat mental health
  • a counsellor offering guidance and support through conversation and development of problem-solving skills.

All mental health professionals are likely to have a profound effect on the lives of the people they treat.
