Construction of the new $5.5 million Yarraman Waste Management Facility is set to commence in the coming weeks with local contractor Newlands Group recently being awarded tender.
Once the project is completed Yarraman will be home to the Region's first Tier 4 Waste Management Facility.
Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) Water and Waste Portfolio Leader Councillor Nancy Sommerfield said the new facility will be similar to the state-of-the-art flagship Greater Toowoomba Waste Management Facility (GTWMF) on a smaller scale.
"This is a major project that will serve Yarraman for many years to come and is important for the health and safety of the community," Cr Sommerfield said.
"Construction will boost our economy with local contactor Newlands Group being awarded tender and around 13 local jobs being created within the Toowoomba Region as a result of the project.
"The existing landfill in Yarraman is nearing capacity and needs to be upgraded but we are also looking forward to offering the community more opportunities for recycling and reducing the volume of waste in our landfills."
The new facility will be built on the same site as the existing landfill, on unused land at the front of the lot with the popular garden area retained for the community.
Early works including removal of vegetation on the site are expected to commence before Christmas with construction ramping up in January 2022.
The Queensland Government has contributed $2 million towards the project through its South East Queensland Community Stimulus Program.
Council allocated $3.5 million in its 2021/22 budget towards the project, which is being delivered as part of the Waste Infrastructure Plan in line with TRC's Waste Management Strategy 2017.
The new facility is currently expected to be operational by October 2022.
