The $4.24 million Geraldton Cycling Network Expansion Project is set to begin construction in early 2022 to provide Geraldton residents and visitors with a further 8.3 kilometres of high-quality shared paths for riding and walking.
These projects were identified in the Geraldton 2050 Cycling Strategy and the City of Greater Geraldton secured funding through the WA Bicycle Network Grants Program.
To the north of the city, Stage 1 will see the design and construction of a 360-metre long,
3-metre wide shared path along Glenfield Beach Drive from Chapman Road, to complete the connection to Glenfield Beach in 2021-22.
Set to be delivered in 2022-23 as part of the overall Glenfield Beach to Drummond Cove route, Stage 2 will connect Sunset Beach to Drummond Cove with a $1.4 million, 3.5km shared path on Chapman Road.
To the south of the city, the $2.62 million Stage 3 will see a 4.5km shared path constructed on Brand Highway from Tarcoola Beach to Cape Burney.
The Department of Transport is also working with the City of Geraldton to transform the 1.4km section of Railway Street in Bluff Point from Smith Street to Green Street into a Safe Active Street (SAS).
This is the first regional SAS project being delivered through the Department of Transport SAS pilot program and is due for completion in early 2022.
Over the next four years, the McGowan Government is investing more than $265 million to upgrade and construct more high-quality infrastructure for safe and connected riding and walking across the State.
As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:
"Our Government is committed to delivering top quality walking and riding infrastructure all around Western Australia.
"Over the next two years we will be transforming the Geraldton cycling network with an additional 8.3 kilometres of high-quality shared paths for riding and walking to be constructed.
"This project will enable Geraldton locals the opportunity to ride or walk to school, work or the local shops, and provides visitors to the region with a new option to explore the city safely.
"We are investing $265 million over the next four years to improve and build more active travel options in Western Australia."
As stated by Geraldton MLA Lara Dalton:
"I am so proud that work will soon commence on these key cycling and walking upgrades.
"These upgrades will better connect Geraldton with surrounding suburbs, making it safer and easier for people walking, driving and cycling.
"This is one of my key election commitments and I'm pleased to see work will commence shortly."
