Consultation has opened on the proposed Judicial Commissions Bill 2024.
The Bill seeks to establish a judicial conduct body in Tasmania to receive and consider complaints against judicial officers.
Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Guy Barnett, said that the tabling of this Consultation Draft Bill fulfils an important commitment under the Government's 100 day plan.
"We took this to the election, making it clear that we would progress legislation to establish an independent oversight body," the Attorney-General said.
"The body will manage judicial complaints and support a consistent, contemporary and accountable judicial system to ensure Tasmanians can have confidence in the courts.
"Under our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future we have proudly introduced a number of measures which would strengthen and modernise Tasmania's legal system even further.
"The longevity and ongoing strength of Tasmania's legal system is something to be proud of – and measures like this can ensure this important institution is modern and fit-for-purpose."
