Three contractors based in the G21 region have been selected by council to move bulk household and green organics throughout the municipality until July 2025.
Newcomb Sand and Soil, Green Care Mulching and Wettenhalls offer employment opportunities to the local region.
The businesses have committed to purchasing local resources and materials, and sub-contract from within the region as needed.
The Procurement Policy, which was adopted in December last year, includes weighting to encourage the use of local suppliers.
The contractors will take rubbish and garden organics from waste collection vehicles and load them into bulk haulage vehicles.
This will allow them to move the materials across greater distances, including to the City's Garden Organics Processing Facility in Anakie.
The contract is for an initial term of three years, with two 12-month options to extend.
The panel contract is estimated to cost $640,000 per year excluding GST over the full five years.
Greater Geelong Mayor Peter Murrihy;
It's great to be able to invest $640,000 directly into the G21 region economy.It's really pleasing to see the panel of contractors are committed to providing jobs to our community members and sourcing local product where possible.
This will have a positive impact on our economy.
Cr Belinda Moloney, chair of the Circular Economy portfolio;
There are so many reliable businesses in the G21 region.It's important that where we can, we channel investment back into the local community, and this tender appointment is a good example of that.
Supporting local businesses leads to wide-ranging economic and social benefits for the community.
