The Tasmanian Liberal Government is committed to ensuring the State can continue to attract high-quality teaching staff to our regional and remote areas.
The rollout of the Tasmanian Government's $15 million commitment to build or upgrade teacher residences across Tasmania is progressing, with the appointment of Meadcon Building and Construction to undertake refurbishment works to 14 residences in Queenstown.
Minister for Education, Jo Palmer, said as part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future, we're providing modern, fit-for-purpose residences for our teachers.
"We love our teachers, and we want them to have the best possible accommodation in our regional and remote areas," Minister Palmer said.
"The upgrades to 14 residences in Queenstown will help to ensure that we can continue to attract and retain high-quality teaching staff."
The Teacher Residences Program will also see construction commence on up to 22 new residences progressively over the next six years, and these new residences will be located in our greatest demand areas, including the West Coast, Scottsdale, Smithton and Flinders Island.
The design and location of the new residences will be determined in consultation with schools and their staff, with the tender for the first tranche of new residences expected to be released in the second half of 2025.
Our Government's investment in building and upgrading teacher residences is in addition to our commitment to provide financial incentives for teachers in hard-to-staff locations, which is designed to target areas that most need teachers.
