Convention Centre Plan Sets Stage for Canberra's Comeback
The Property Council of Australia has welcomed the commitment from the Federal and ACT Governments to progress plans for a new Canberra Convention and Entertainment Centre, calling it a critical move to unlock the city's potential as a true national capital.
The $200 million joint pledge announced today will fund feasibility, design and land preparation works, including the relocation of the Civic Pool to Commonwealth Park.
Property Council ACT & Capital Region Executive Director Ashlee Berry said the announcement reflects long-standing advocacy from industry on the clear need for a modern, fit-for-purpose venue.
"Canberra deserves a world-class convention centre that reflects our status as the national capital," Ms Berry said.
"We've been calling for action on this project for years - and today's announcement marks an important first step."
The Property Council's 2024 ACT Election Platform, Foundations for Tomorrow's Canberra, highlighted the need to build a new Convention Centre, alongside a new stadium and light rail extensions, positioning it as a key driver for economic growth, tourism, and vibrancy.
"We need infrastructure that draws people back into the heart of Canberra - this project could do exactly that," Ms Berry said.
"Now we call on other parties to follow suit and commit to this vital project for Canberra's future.
"This is about more than just bricks and mortar - it's about creating a city that can host major national and international events, support the visitor economy, and help bring life back into Civic.
"Now we need to keep the momentum going - while the Convention Centre commitment is a great start, we need to leverage every effort for a new stadium that is well supported by light rail, with strong connections to the night-time economy, and accommodation," she said.
The Property Council will continue working with all levels of government to advocate for smart investment in essential infrastructure that supports a growing, ambitious, and liveable Canberra.
