Cook Govt Backs 51 Affordable Homes in Albany

  • New $25 million Cook Labor Government investment to support delivery of 51 new affordable homes in Albany
  • Mixed-use development including additional dental services to be built in Spencer Park, close to the Albany Health Campus, local schools and shops
  • Cook Government working in partnership with WA's community housing sector

The Cook Labor Government will provide $25 million to support the delivery of 51 new affordable homes in Albany, in a major boost to housing in the Great Southern region.

The $25 million contribution will be provided to community housing provider Advance Housing to fund 40 social and affordable homes, with 11 additional homes planned that may be utilised for government or key worker accommodation.

Advance Housing plans to develop the total of 51 new dwellings on a site on Hardie Road in Spencer Park, which is conveniently located near the Albany Health Campus, Spencer Park Primary School and a local shopping centre.

The mixed-use development is also expected to accommodate additional dental services in Albany, with $13 million invested by the Cook Government to expand services, as well as office space.

The State Government's latest funding commitment follows completion of another 16 new social homes in Albany earlier this month, with work continuing to deliver 12 new social homes jointly funded by the Cook and Albanese Labor governments through the Albany "My Home" project.

The planned homes are part of the Spencer Park Renewal Project, which has so far delivered:

  • street and landscaping, including upgrades to existing footpaths;
  • improvements and new public access to Mokare Park;
  • delivery of new road connections and infrastructure; and
  • improvements and expansion to available housing.

This investment builds on the Cook Labor Government's record $4.5 billion additional investment focused on boosting housing supply and homelessness measures right across the State.

As stated by Premier Roger Cook:

"Western Australia is leading the nation when it comes to increasing housing supply and choice, and this is reflected in the latest building approvals figures.

"These 51 new affordable homes close to Spencer Park Primary School, shops and health services will be an important addition for Albany families.

"Delivering affordable housing close to quality services continues to be a priority, and we are pleased to be delivering this project in partnership with Advance Housing as a key component of the Spencer Park Renewal Project in Albany.

"Only my WA Labor Government has the experience to do what's right for regional WA, and we are getting on with the job of delivering the housing projects regional communities want and need."

As stated by Housing Minister John Carey:

"With $25 million now committed to support the delivery of 51 new affordable homes in Albany, we're working with community housing provider Advance Housing to get this important project built as part of the Spencer Park Renewal Project.

"Earlier this month, we completed 16 new social homes in Albany, and announced a further 12 new social homes have been jointly funded by the Cook and Albanese Labor governments for construction in McKail as part of the Albany "My Home" project.

"The Cook Labor Government continues to do everything it can to boost supply of social housing in Albany and across Western Australia, with our record $4.5 billion additional investment to boost housing supply in this term of Government."

As stated by Albany MLA Rebecca Stephens:

"This is another fantastic outcome for the Albany community, and I'll continue to advocate for new affordable and social housing for locals - particularly those who need it most.

"Our Government is investing a further $25 million and partnering with the community housing sector to deliver these 51 new affordable homes in Spencer Park.

"It's a pleasure to be able to partner with Advance Housing, which already has a strong track record of providing affordable housing in Albany."

As stated by Advance Housing chief executive officer John Lysaught:

"Advance Housing is proud to demonstrate the impact that community-led initiatives, such as our Hardie Road project, can have on the broader community when supported by government.

"This investment in embracing the project's mixed-use site and mixed housing tenure elements will enrich the community fabric of Spencer Park.

"Advance Housing commends the Cook Labor Government on partnering with and supporting Advance Housing to deliver this significant project."
