- Cook Government reaches another key delivery milestone as part of record $3.2 billion investment in housing and homelessness measures
- More than 2,500 social homes added since 2021-2022
The Cook Labor Government has reached another key housing delivery milestone, with more than 2,500 social homes added to the State's public housing stock since the Government's record $3.2 billion investment in housing and homelessness measures.
In the face of skilled worker shortages and a heated construction market, the Cook Government's significant housing reform program has bolstered supply of social housing across Western Australia through:
- a small and medium builders panel which includes builders across the State that are pre-approved for Government work to further support social housing delivery;
- utilising alternative construction methods including timber and steel frame, modular and prefabricated construction;
- providing more than $200 million in grants to the community housing sector to deliver new builds and refurbish existing homes to keep existing stock in the system and fit-for-purpose;
- driving nation-leading planning reforms that cut red tape to boost housing supply throughout WA;
- boosting the spot purchasing program; and
- boosting the Call for Submissions processes, including a $50 million Call for Submissions for the community housing sector and local governments to deliver social housing in regional WA.
The Cook Government's $3.2 billion investment in housing and homelessness services includes delivery of around 5,000 social dwellings, along with refurbishments and maintenance work to many thousands more.
As stated by Premier Roger Cook:
"Boosting housing supply continues to be a top priority for my Government and we are working with industry to deliver the housing WA needs now and into the future.
"As a result of our housing reforms and record $3.2 billion investment in housing and homelessness measures since 2021-22, more than 2,500 additional social homes are now providing safe and affordable housing to vulnerable Western Australians who need it most.
"This is a significant milestone - particularly in the post-pandemic building environment - and there are more social homes already under contract or construction.
"Only we have a plan to deliver more housing supply across WA, and it's good to see real progress being made."
As stated by Housing Minister John Carey:
"Our Government remains acutely aware of the housing market across the country and its impacts on many Western Australians.
"This is why we're getting on with delivering a record $3.2 billion investment in housing and homelessness measures.
"Since our Government's record investment in housing and homelessness measures we've added more than 2,500 social homes, with more than 1,000 social homes currently under contract or construction.
"I want to be clear, we're not stopping - we continue to deliver major reforms to boost housing supply throughout WA."
