- Lotterywest grant of $1.2 million awarded to SecondBite
- Funding will go towards the fit-out of SecondBite's new Kewdale warehouse
- Grant will ensure more Western Australian families are provided with fresh produce
Leading food relief organisation SecondBite will significantly expand its capacity to provide food to vulnerable Western Australian families thanks to a $1.2 million Lotterywest grant.
The grant will go towards the installation of cold storage facilities, racking, office space, and a high-reach forklift at SecondBite's new Kewdale facility.
In addition, it will reduce food wastage and ensure that more Western Australians in need are provided with fresh produce that would have otherwise gone to landfill.
The Kewdale facility will have the capacity to distribute over 17 million kilograms, which is the equivalent of 35 million meals, to families across the State.
The grant comes in addition to a $500,000 investment from the State Government to SecondBite, which formed part of a $1.5 million donation to food relief organisations to provide relief to struggling families as part of the recent State Budget.
As a result of the donation, SecondBite purchased a 13-tonne truck to expand their collection and delivery networks.
As stated by Community Services Minister Sabine Winton:
"I am proud that the Cook Government, through Lotterywest, is able support SecondBite in its mission to deliver nutritious food to vulnerable families.
"This grant will help SecondBite increase their capacity to provide food relief to Western Australian families doing it tough.
"Our Government will continue to do everything we can to assist families impacted by cost of living pressures."
As stated by Belmont MLA Cassie Rowe:
"Food relief organisations such as SecondBite do fantastic work in the community supporting families in need.
"I welcome the new facility in Kewdale and look forward to seeing how it will enable SecondBite to continue their important work.
"I'm proud to be part of a State Government that is committed to providing genuine cost of living relief for Western Australian families."
As stated by SecondBite State Manager Lyndon Nilsson:
"With the fit-out of the new site, we will have the capacity to handle over 17 million kilograms of food, or the equivalent of 35 million meals per year, allowing us to distribute a greater volume of essential food items to our network of over 200 charity partners in WA.
"We are deeply grateful to the State Government and Lotterywest for this vital support, which will enable us to better serve our community."
