More than 50 streets will be transformed over the coming months as part of Mildura Rural City Council's 2024 Cool It Street Program.
The program, which has been made possible thanks to funding from the Loddon Mallee Public Health Unit, aims to create healthier and greener neighbourhoods, providing quality tree canopy cover by planting semi-mature trees in areas most in need.
The community was encouraged to nominate streets for consideration late last year, with dozens of nominations received. Some streets were also included in the program after being identified as having low tree canopy.
Council has begun contacting residents of successful streets, which cover Mildura, Red Cliffs and Merbein, to detail the next stage of the program.
Plantings will take place from April 2024, and coincide with Council's 2024 tree planting program.
Councillor for Environmental and Sustainability Jason Modica congratulated the winning streets, and thanked those community members who showed an interest.
"This is the fourth year we've delivered this exciting program, increasing the number of streets set to benefit considerably in 2024," Cr Modica said.
"The benefits of Cool it Street Program are to provide shade where there is none, improve streetscape amenities and walkability and showcase how we can better adapt to climate change."
