COP29: Can It Improve Global Future?

An important recognition of Global Greenhouse Gas Watch (G3W) work at COP29. What Comes Next?
Regarding the urgent need to monitor greenhouse gases, the COP29 climate conference has officially recognized G3W progress.

At its 61 st session, the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) acknowledged the initiative's progress, highlighting the power of international collaboration, commitment, and a shared vision in addressing global challenges.

The SBSTA also took note of the 2023 WMO Greenhouse Gas Bulletin and the WMO State of the Climate 2024 Update . It expressed utmost concern about the state of the global climate system with record high atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations , as carbon dioxide, CO2, reached 420.0 ppm ± 0.2 ppm in 2023. Global carbon emissions from fossil fuels reached a new record in 2024, with no evidence that the world has yet achieved peak emissions.

While Finance and Economics remain key drivers influencing negotiations, Science plays a pivotal role in raising awareness about the risks of global warming to humanity and the planet. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), represented by Dr. Gianpaolo Balsamo from its Infrastructure Department, along with Members, remains committed to advancing climate resilience solutions and working to prevent worst-case scenarios.

Through the Global Greenhouse Gas Watch , supporting global data centres we will jointly provide more timely information to monitor the effectiveness of mitigation actions under the Paris Agreement.

The 29th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), held in Baku, Azerbaijan, has concluded, leaving decision-makers with the critical responsibility of preserving a livable planet. They must now ensure the necessary means of implementation are provided to operationalize the G3W systems, which are essential for assessing the progress of the Paris Agreement.
