Project details

Cornwall is home to one of the most diverse, sustainable fleets in Europe, and has a strong fishing community. Following publication of the Cornish Fishing Strategy which revealed four key areas of focus post-Brexit, Cornish Fish Producers' Organisation applying for funding support in three phases between November 2022 and August 2023 to commission the 'Value of Seafood to Cornwall' research report to determine the sector's true value and promote the outcomes.

Chris Ranford, Chief Executive, Cornish Fish Producers' Organisation said:

The results of the research are outstanding, there was never a need to question the importance of seafood to Cornwall but now we have credible evidence to back it up.

There's a lot of change going on in the fishing industry in this post-Brexit era, but a real missing link is socio-economic evidence. This research was integral to taking the Cornish Fishing Strategy forward and will help us drive investment, apply resources in the right places and empower stronger decision-making.

Project outcomes

  • Shape the methodology of the socio-economic study that will generate evidence and understanding of the value of fish to Cornwall
  • Four dissemination activities undertaken to improve knowledge in the fishing industry
