Federation Council is pleased to announce the completion of a comprehensive safety upgrade to the Corowa Public School car park, significantly enhancing the safety and efficiency of the area for students, parents, and staff.
The $160,000 project, funded through the Australian (Federal) Government's Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) grant program and through Federation Council's capital works program budget, directly addresses longstanding concerns raised by the school community regarding student safety, parking facilities, and traffic flow conflicts involving students, parent vehicles, and buses.
Federation Council Mayor, Cr Cheryl Cook said it was fantastic to see the project completed.
"This upgrade to the Corowa Public School car park is a fantastic project for our community, providing a safer and more efficient environment for students, parents, and staff," Mayor Cook said.
"Council and our staff are proud to have delivered this project, which demonstrates our commitment to improving infrastructure and enhancing the well-being and safety of our residents. I must say though, it is a real pity the current Federal Government discarded this LRCI grant program several years ago, which is a significant loss to councils, as it provided some great outcomes for local roads and community infrastructure. Council continues to lobby as an industry for their re-instatement".
Key improvements implemented as part of the upgrade include:
Enhanced pedestrian safety: Installation of a new pedestrian crossing leading to the northern parent parking bay and pedestrian fencing within the bus bay, significantly improving student safety.
Improved drainage and infrastructure: Upgrades to drainage with the installation of kerb and channel, ensuring better water management.
Clearer traffic flow: Resealing and line-marking of the car park, along with the establishment of a designated pick-up and drop-off zone, streamlining traffic flow.
Accessible parking: Creation of a parallel disabled parking bay adjacent to the school, ensuring accessibility for all.
Defined parking and movement: Installation of wheel stops in reverse-in parking spaces, construction of footpaths behind both parent parking bays, and "No Stopping" signage on nature strips to regulate parking and pedestrian movement.
Safety focused tree management: Removal of trees where necessary for safety and functionality.
These upgrades have been designed to create a safer and more organised environment for the entire school community, minimising potential hazards and improving overall accessibility.
Council extends its gratitude to the Corowa Public School community for their valuable input and cooperation throughout the project.
