Correctional Officer Charged With Assaulting Female Inmate

Corrective Services Investigation Unit detectives have charged a male correctional officer over the alleged sexual assault of a female inmate in the state's west.

On Thursday 1 August 2023, police received a report a 36-year-old man had allegedly sexually assaulted a 28-year-old woman at a correctional centre in Wellington between Tuesday 18 June 2024 and Tuesday 30 July 2024.

The matter was referred to State Crime Command's Robbery and Serious Crime Squad Corrective Services Investigation Unit who established an investigation under Strike Force Milton.

Following inquiries, about 8.40am yesterday (Thursday 8 August 2024), detectives attended the correctional centre in Wellington, where they arrested a 36-year-old man.

The man was taken to Wellington Police Station, where he was charged with four offences, including three counts of aggravated sexual assault – victim under authority of offender, and engage in relationship with inmate etc cause safety etc risk.

He was refused bail to appear before Dubbo Local Court today (Friday 9 August 2024).
