At around 8:30pm last night (Wednesday 30 October), two 17-year-old males who had absconded from the Alice Springs Youth Detention Centre handed themselves in to Police.
The young people were accompanied by their family who supported them to attend the Alice Springs police station where they were held in custody overnight and will face Court this morning.
It is not believed that young people were involved in any other offending while absconded from the centre and will today face charges in relation to absconding from a youth detention centre and causing damage to the centre.
Both young people appear to be unhurt and handed themselves in without incident.
The two young people had climbed on the roof of the Alice Springs Youth Justice Facility at around 5:30pm Tuesday 29 October and shortly after, had escaped the perimeter by using materials they had forcibly removed from the roof as a tool to shield themselves from razor wire as they climbed over the fence.
My gratitude goes to our dedicated Youth Justice Officers who have worked tirelessly over the past 24 hours assisting police to find and apprehend these young people. Their extensive work with young people in detention and their families contributed greatly to the young people heading home to family who then supported them to hand themselves in to police.
