COTA Australia Hails UNs Major Move on Seniors Rights

On April 3, 2025 the United Nations Human Rights Council, supported by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights adopted a resolution to form a working group for older persons' rights, the Open-Ended Working Group on Ageing.

This is an important development, because after many years of work and advocacy by national human rights institutions, NGOs, civil society, and supportive governments, the UN Human Rights Council has agreed to progress a framework that should eventuate in a new UN convention on the human rights of older persons.

A new convention will have a positive impact on the lives of older persons around the world today, and all of us as we age in the future. It will provide greater clarity and essential guidance on how to better promote and protect older persons' rights. It will help eliminate ageism and age discrimination and ensure that older persons can seek redress for violations of their rights.

This important political decision brings us closer to making this a reality.
