COTA Australia Unveils Election Agenda for Seniors

Older Australians want to see our political leaders commit to a range of cost of living measures in the lead up to the federal election, including the introduction of a Seniors Dental Benefit Scheme, an increase in rental assistance for eligible seniors and for innovative programs to help older women find affordable housing.

In its election agenda, which has been sent to political parties, COTA Australia also calls for action to address ageism, measures to protect people against scams, and for wait times for people waiting for aged care support at home to be reduced to no longer than 30 days.

COTA Australia - the leading advocacy organisation for older people - Chief Executive Officer, Patricia Sparrow, said the Federal Election agenda is practical and achievable list of some of the key issues facing older people that need urgent action.

"Every election is important, but this one is especially important for shaping how we as a country support our ageing population," Ms Sparrow said.

"We're asking all the candidates and parties to consider what we need to do to support an ageing Australia.

"Getting it right for this generation is an investment for current and future generations of older people."

Ms Sparrow said while the recent Federal Budget did take some important steps towards alleviating some cost of living pressures facing Australians - including older Australians - it's clear more needs to be done.

"The Federal Budget did contain some important cost of living measures that will help the hip pockets of many older people, but much more needs to be done to support people, especially our most vulnerable.

"This Federal Election is a chance for our politicians to not just show they understand the challenges facing older people, but that they're ready and willing to take action to address those challenges - not just for the older people of today, but for everyone."

Older Australians invited to join COTA election panel

Ms Sparrow said older Australians are being invited to take part in the COTA election panel to share their insights and views on issues throughout the campaign period.

"It's crucial the voice of older people is heard clearly in the lead up to the election.

"The COTA election panel is an opportunity to share your insights and give our politicians a first-hand view of what's really impacting older Australians.
