Council Adds Extra Waste Pickup After Wild Weather

Following the weekend's severe weather and high winds, Blue Mountains City Council is offering residents an additional FREE green waste service to help clear vegetation. kerbside chipping service in action

Mayor, Cr Mark Greenhill said: "In recent years, Council has introduced new services and increased flexibility to support residents to manage unplanned waste from their properties - whether it be from natural disasters or wind events such as the one we've just experienced.

"To further support residents, they will be offered an extra FREE booked waste service this year to help clear green waste. This means there will now be three free booked waste services, instead of two."

There are different Booked Waste Service options, and residents can choose which combination to use for their three FREE services now available in 2024-2025:

  • Kerbside Chipping Service - make a booking until the end of July now for a chipping service during August.
  • Facility Drop Off - make a booking to drop off at Katoomba or Blaxland Resource Recovery and Waste Management Facilities at no extra cost. Next day drop-off usually available and residents can nominate someone else to deliver the material on your behalf.
  • Kerbside Collection - make a booking for our staff to come and collect bundled green waste. Support can be provided with bundling the green waste for residents with medical or mobility needs.

Each service can be up to 4 cubic metres of material at the kerb, that is the footprint of a king size mattress and one metre in height, or a box trailer full. You can use services at the same time for 8 cubic materials of disposal.

We will ensure adequate resourcing so that the utilisation of these services is not unduly delayed, understanding that there may be large demand for them.

Council also provides a weekly green bin collection during September. You may be able to stockpile the leaves and small twigs from fallen branches and trees until then.

Finally, Council operates two Resource Recovery & Waste Management Facilities that can accept tree waste at a reduced cost, year round. You can find details of all the materials accepted here: bmcc.nsw.gov.au/facility-drop-off

These service options are designed to provide flexibility to residents and manage demand so that unsafe conditions are not created at Council's facilities with an uncontrolled influx of residents.
