Wingecarribee Shire's new purpose-built Animal Shelter will be co-located adjacent to a new State Emergency Service (SES) building that will house the Moss Vale branch.
The two facilities will be co-located on Council-owned property at 2 Bowman Road in Moss Vale.
Council's Interim Administrator Mr Viv May made the announcement at Wednesday evening's Ordinary Meeting of Council.
"Council's existing Animal Shelter within the Resource Recovery Centre is well past its expiration date," he said. "It's run down, too small, unsafe and unwelcoming."
Mr May said the nearby Moss Vale SES building was similarly confined by its existing footprint.
"We have a duty of care to provide our first responders and volunteers with a new facility that's both larger in size and more accessible if we expect to call on them in the future," he added.
"Co-locating both the Animal Shelter and SES to the one larger and central location will enable Council to provide modern and fit-for-purpose facilities for both of these essential providers."
Wingecarribee Shire Council acquired the Bowman Street property following formal resolution at its meeting of 11 November 2020. The purchase of the land and subsequent construction of the Animal Shelter will be funded via monies raised from the sale of pre-existing Council-owned property at Frankland Street in Mittagong.
Council continues to seek external funding opportunities to construct the SES facility.
The new Animal Shelter is proposed to contain an administrative area, isolation and adoption compounds, examination facilities, meeting rooms, reception space and amenities and indoor and outdoor pens and runs.
A modular design for the SES facility is proposed and will include dedicated vehicle, training and amenities areas.
Both the Animal Shelter and SES building will have dedicated and separate carparking facilities.
Construction on the Animal Shelter is anticipated to start in late 2022.
