Council Approves Indigenous Strategy

Georges River Council

Georges River Council adopted its first Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Strategy at the Council Meeting on Monday 24 February 2025.

Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg thanked Bidjigal Traditional Owners, Council's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Committee, Aboriginal consultancy Ngurra Advisory, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who live, work and meet in the Georges River area, and Council staff who were involved in the formation of the Strategy.

"Today marks a significant step forward in our journey toward reconciliation and inclusivity. The adoption of our new Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Strategy reflects our commitment to recognising the unique histories, cultures, and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

"Together, we will work toward a future that respects cultural protocols, values diversity, supports cultural preservation, and empowers Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

"This Strategy will guide our actions and ensure that we move forward in a way that is respectful, inclusive, and driven by the voices of those it affects. We acknowledge the past, and with this Strategy, we are embracing a future of unity and shared progress."

Following review of local demographics, strategic alignment analysis, and extensive community consultation, a Draft Strategy was developed to provide a foundation for Council and the wider community to learn about, value and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. The Draft Strategy also aimed to empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through employment and economic opportunities. The Draft Strategy included an Action Plan with deliverables in three focus areas: Culture, Value and Empower.

On 25 November 2024, Council endorsed the Draft Strategy for the community to be consulted before the Strategy would be returned to Council for adoption.

Following this consultation, a final version of the Strategy was adopted on 24 February 2025.

Council thanked everyone in the community who contributed to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Strategy and encouraged everyone to view the Strategy on the Georges River Council website.
