Council is once again proud to support the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign.
The campaign is a global initiative that raises awareness and encourages communities, organisations, and individuals to take action in preventing violence and promoting gender equality.
The 16 Days of Activism begins on 25 November, marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and concludes on 10 December being International Human Rights Day.
Council is committed to playing an active role in this campaign, having provided grants of up to $500 to support a range of community-led projects that raise awareness and promote gender equality during the 16 Days of Activism including:
- Educational activities and workshops in local schools
- Community art installations promoting gender equality
- Participation in the Walk Against Family Violence in Melbourne CBD
- Stencilling project, where community sporting clubs, leisure facilities and community hubs display stencils reading 'Respect Women – Call it Out'
- Lighting up of the Eltham Gateway sculpture in orange
Nillumbik CEO Carl Cowie highlighted the importance of community involvement in the fight against gender-based violence.
"Gender-based violence is an issue that affects all communities, and it is vital that we work together to eliminate it," Mr Cowie said.
"We are proud to support the community-led projects that will take place in Nillumbik as part of this campaign. These initiatives not only raise awareness but also provide opportunities for people to engage in conversations around gender-based violence and its prevention."
