Broadening housing supply remains a top priority for Lake Macquarie City Council, with Councillors approving the Housing Diversity Planning Proposal at tonight's meeting.
Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz said the plan received 20 submissions while on public exhibition from September to October 2024.
"Submissions raised the benefits of the proposal including increased options for smaller developers, greater housing diversity and enhanced opportunities for intergenerational living," he said.
"This proposal is so important as it seeks to address the region's housing crisis by enabling more flexible and efficient residential development.
"Essentially it will increase housing variety in Lake Macquarie by allowing a broader range of housing types in low and medium density residential zones."
Water security was also a focal point with Councillors nominating Cr Matt Schultz and Cr Stacey Radcliffe to represent Council on Hunter Water's Belmont Desalination Plant Community Consultative Committee.
"This ensures Council's interest and community concerns are communicated throughout the construction of the desalination plant, fostering collaboration and strong relationships with external organisations."
The Community Strategic Plan 2025-2035 was also adopted by Councillors.
It outlines the city's 10-year plan and prioritises jobs, housing and access to community spaces while protecting the city's environment.
Councillors approved the draft Councillor Fees, Expenses and Facilities Policy to go on public exhibition for 28 days.
The draft policy includes updated councillor fees, superannuation contributions, and expense limits – ensuring compliance with legislative requirements.
Councillors approved $10,400 in funding for seven community activities as part of the Lake Macquarie Youth Week 2025 grants program.
Youth Week is a week-long celebration packed with initiatives to empower young people, encourage social connection and celebrate their contributions to the community.
