Latrobe City Council has worked with the Moe Yallourn Rail Trail Committee of Management to improve the surface condition of the trail.
Due to some large rocks which made the surface uneven, a 680-metre section of the Moe Yallourn Rail Trail between the Moe Botanical Gardens and emergency marker MTY 100 has been re-sheeted.
The Moe Yallourn Rail Trail Committee of Management maintain the trail with the assistance of an Annual Maintenance Grant from Council. Re-sheeting falls outside the Committee's maintenance requirements, so Council completed these works to complement the incredible work the Committee has already undertaken.
The Committee is a dedicated group of volunteers that hold weekly working bees to keep the trail, and surrounds, in excellent condition. They also raise funds to undertake larger projects, such as the clearing of the drains, which was completed prior to the re-sheeting.
During the re-sheeting process, the Committee and Council contractors also repaired the approaches to the bridge, to make the trail more accessible.
The section which has been re-sheeted is high use, forming part of the weekly Park Run Circuit.
These upgrades will ensure our green spaces are accessible, inclusive, and safe, as outlined in the Council Plan 2021-2025.
Mayor of Latrobe City Council, Councillor Darren Howe, said these upgrades are an important part of making the Rail Trail more accessible for the community.
"The upgrades and maintenance the Committee and Council have completed together will ensure this section of the Rail Trail will hold up well through winter and remain in excellent condition for several years to come."
Secretary of the committee, Margaret Coupe, said that the committee is very grateful for the work Council undertook to improve the surface of the trail, which has already made a big impact on its usability.
"We are very grateful to have had assistance in re-sheeting this high-use, worn-down section of the trail. We have already received many comments from the community about how great the upgrades are!"
Many local committees are seeking volunteers to assist in the management and development of reserves and gardens.
