In the lead-up to International Women's Day on 8 March, Cessnock City Council is proud to reaffirm its commitment to supporting and empowering women to accelerate in the workplace.
This year's theme for International Women's Day, "Accelerate Action", highlights the urgent need for greater momentum to break down barriers and advance gender equality.
In line with this theme, Council is focused on creating opportunities to enhance access to education, and provide clear pathways for career advancement.
As of 2025, Council proudly supports 20 female employees currently pursuing tertiary studies through our Study Assistance program.
Cessnock City Council's People and Culture Manager Michelle Honeyman says empowering women is a key focus for Council.
"We're empowering women by offering opportunities for skill development, career growth, and leadership training, paving the way for success in their chosen career paths," she said.
"When we provide opportunities for women to grow, whether through education, mentorship, or leadership training, we are not only investing in their future, but in the future of our community."
Cessnock City Council's Junior Project Manager Britt Barlow shared the importance of the organisation's support and recognition in driving her professional growth.
"I wouldn't be completing my studies or progressing in my career without the support and belief of my management and team, who recognised my skills and encouraged me to pursue further education in this field," she said.
"Sometimes all it takes is for others to see in you what you don't see in yourself – then to provide the support and mentorship to help you flourish."
This International Women's Day, Council remains committed to accelerating action to achieve gender equality, and setting an example for the wider region.
