Council Brings Curtis Park Expansion Into Play

Armidale Regional Council

Armidale Regional Council (ARC) is seeking community feedback on an expansion of the popular Adventure Playground at Curtis Park.

The proposed development will grow the existing Adventure Playground in a staged expansion. It is proposed to enclose an area of 1.6 acres, extending from the northern end of the car park at the Visitor Information Centre across to Faulkner Street, joining into the existing playground fence.

According to ARC, the proposed expansion will result in a larger and safer area for children of various ages to play.

"The Adventure Playground at Curtis Park, which opened in the heart of Armidale in 2020, is popular and widely used by families throughout the community," said Mayor Sam Coupland.

"However, since it opened Council has received feedback that the area should be fully fenced and that there is not enough play equipment to suit all age ranges and abilities.

"As expanding this playground is a priority for ARC, a concept report has been produced for a staged expansion to be delivered as funding becomes available."

The proposed first stage includes detailed design and fencing around the full perimeter of the 1.6-acre area, mimicking the fence that is around the existing playground.

ARC has secured a Local Roads Community Infrastructure grant of $701,353 for stage one of the expansion works.

The concept plan proposes that stage one includes an accessibility swing so that children of all abilities can swing. A seating/sliding structure will be created along with a garden area, rocks and dry creek bed, providing elements of nature play.

New paths and gates are proposed to link the new playground with the existing one. The amenities will be fenced and include a new gate for access. The existing play area to the north of the car park will be removed and repurposed (as this area is not fenced and is near to the creek).

Further proposed stages might include a timber and rope climbing structure, a sandpit area, a new entrance way and provision for a mobile café. Council is applying for grants to deliver the proposed further stages of the expansion.

"Curtis Park is not just a playground. It's a cornerstone for our community's families," said Mayor Coupland.

"Ensuring it offers inclusive facilities that cater to every age and ability is crucial. By investing in this infrastructure, we're not just improving a park — we're enhancing the quality of life for our families.

"Once complete, Curtis Park will stand as a premier playground in our region, a testament to our commitment to creating spaces where everyone can thrive."
