Tweed Shire Council is actively tackling the widespread damage caused by Tropical Cyclone Alfred with vital support from intrastate crews.
The storm has caused significant damage, with fallen trees and debris blocking roads, Council land and private properties.
Council crews are working around the clock to clear the most urgent hazards on community spaces, however the scale of the damage is immense and recovery will take some time.
To speed up the clean-up, additional crews and equipment from other councils have been mobilised to assist in the effort.
Tweed Shire Council General Manager Troy Green said he was incredibly grateful to the general managers from NSW councils, specifically Maitland and Tamworth, who reached out and offered practical help on our road to recovery.
"This is a great testament to local government pulling together and working at its best," Mr Green said.
Maitland City council Civil Plant Operator Blake Lockwood said his crew couldn't believe their eyes when they first saw the damage.
"We had seen photos of how bad the destruction was but seeing it in person is really sad – we've never seen anything like it," he said.
Brendan Smith, Maitland's Second-in-Charge Gardener and Greenkeeper, was happy to offer support to Tweed.
"The team was very willing to chip in and help other councils in times of need."
Maitland crews started work in Koala Beach yesterday and Tamworth Regional Council crews will start today.
Free mulch
Free mulch and chips from the clean up work is now available for the public from early this morning, at the Council playground in Sugar Glider Drive at Koala Beach. Available while stocks last. It's self serve, so please bring your own equipment.
Council will assess where else this could be provided as the clean up progresses
Green waste collections
A free residential kerbside collection will be conducted for yard and tree debris, as well as cyclone-damaged waste (hard waste, such as damaged furniture or items) from next week. The clean-up will be completed suburb by suburb, with details to be announced when they become available. Follow Council's Facebook page for updates.
