Council Crews Progress Highway Mowing In Nowra

Grass verges along the Princes Highway in Nowra are being cut in a multi-day blitz by Shoalhaven Council mowing crews.

More than 6km of highway from the Nowra Bridge to the industrial estates of South Nowra are being mowed, and at times may include some night works to take advantage of reduced traffic volumes.

Mayor Patricia White said although Transport for NSW manages the state network, including the Princes Highway, Council maintains parts of the network including the road verges.

"The community is very passionate about the state of our roads, footpaths, nature-strips and verges so it makes sense for our crews to maintain the main thoroughfare through Nowra," Cr White said.

"Work has been carried out to avoid disrupting traffic flow on the busy stretch of highway and staff will continue to maintain the stretch every four to eight weeks," she said.

"Typically, motorists and residents will see more mowing activity in the summer months when the grass grows quickly and less activity over winter when growth slows."

Council crews mow vegetated road verges and nature strips that are not maintained by businesses or residents. Private and commercial properties generally maintain grassed nature strips adjoining their properties.

Areas targeted by Council crews include Marriott Park near the Nowra CBD and the Nowra General Cemetery on Kalandar Street.

An initiative to publish the mowing schedule for parks and reserves across the Shoalhaven has begun and can now be found on Council's website.
