Council encourages residents to join 'Plastic free July' with online competition

Plastic Free July starts Thursday and Orange City Council is offering gift vouchers to people who come up with the best and most innovative ways to reduce plastic use during the month.

Orange Mayor Reg Kidd said Council would promote tips and tricks on social media about how residents could start avoiding, reducing and recycling single-use plastics in their daily lives.

"Plastic Free July is a great way to get residents talking about how we can reduce our waste, and there are so many people in our community already doing great things in this regard," Cr Kidd said.

"Social media posts on Council's social media pages during each week of July will aim to encourage local residents to make simple switches to cut down on single-use plastics," Cr Kidd said.

"Council will also be hosting a beeswax wrap-making workshop run by local low waste champion Kate Willoughby, of Orange Eco, to create a low-waste alternative to plastic cling wrap."

The Orange City Council Beeswax Wrap Workshop is on July 9, at 10am at the Environmental Learning Facility in Phillip Street. Bookings are essential via EventBrite.

To showcase residents' efforts to reduce their single-use plastic use, a contest is being run on social media through the use of the hashtag #PFJOrange2021, with residents who use the hashtag going in the draw to win a Shop Orange voucher.

To enter the competition you must upload a photo to Facebook or Instagram and use #PFJOrange2021 in your post. Winners will be chosen by Orange City Council staff based on the most creative and sustainable ways to reduce plastic use in households.

The decision is up to the discretion of a panel of Council staff. You must live in the Orange Local Government Area to enter.

To receive your prize you must be contactable via direct messaging on the social media platforms.

You must collect your prize from Orange City Council within two weeks of being contacted. You must provide proof of residency when collecting your prize.

The competition is open now and will run until July 31, 2021.
