Councillors recommended approving $15,000 worth of grants to help the Lake Macquarie community celebrate NAIDOC Week at tonight's Standing Committee Meeting.
Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser said NAIDOC Week, which runs from 7-14 July, celebrated and shared the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
"It's so important we support these celebrations in our community and continue to showcase this rich culture which spans tens of thousands of years," she said.
This year's theme is 'Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud' which speaks to the long-lasting power and energy of First Nations culture.
The theme of fire represents the bond to the land, to one another, and to the diverse range of customs that make up Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
Councillors recommended 18 applications be approved for funding at the next Ordinary Council meeting.
Meanwhile, Councillors recommended approving proposed changes to the Lake Macquarie Development Control Plan 2014 and the draft Foreshore and Waterway Development Guidelines.
The proposed changes are designed to ensure the rules for building in the foreshore area meet the latest legal requirements and minimise impacts on the environment.
Councillors also recommended approving the closure and subsequent sale of two unnamed roads which adjoin and traverse through land in the Black Rock Motor Resort Development in Wakefield.
Councillors recommended adopting a revised Customer Charter which outlines the Council's commitment to its customers and the service they should expect from Council.
Five donations totalling $9,955 were recommended for approval.
ADRA OpShop, Quirky Quilters, Eastlakes Physical Culture Club, Eagle Rock Dance Club and Valentine Hydrotherapy Pools have been recommended to receive funding.
The full agenda and reports are available at meeting agendas and minutes.
