Bega Valley Shire Council has secured the future of its innovative Waste Grants Program with Councillors agreeing to fund the program for the next four years.

"This commitment will see the program continue through to 2029, further supporting local initiatives that promote waste minimisation, resource recovery and environmental education," Waste Services Manager, Alan Gundrill said.

"The Waste Grants Program has been a key driver of community-led waste diversion and innovation since its inception in 2019, offering targeted grants across various streams."

Under the restructure, the program will be refined to focus on three impactful areas:

  • Clean-up Grants to support local clean-up initiatives
  • Waste Prevention and Innovation Grants to encourage creative and sustainable solutions to waste challenges
  • School Waste Education Program to inspire the next generation of environmental champions.

"This program embodies our commitment to innovative approaches to waste management," Mr Gundrill said.

"By partnering with community members, schools and organisations, we're encouraging grassroots solutions that have a real impact on reducing waste across the shire."

Mr Gundrill said the restructured program builds on past successes while streamlining operations and improving governance.

"This will ensure funds are directed towards initiatives that deliver the greatest value for money, such as volunteer-driven projects, co-funded ventures and efforts to divert significant amounts of waste from landfill," he said.

"We're supporting projects that tackle waste head-on and empowering the community to lead by example and inspire others to adopt sustainable practices."

The Waste Grants Program for 2025-29 will launch next year, with applications opening in February 2025. Community members, schools and organisations are encouraged to start planning their projects now.

A further notice will be issued when the new grants program opens.
