The City of Port Phillip welcomes federal election funding commitments aimed at enhancing public safety across our community. On 25 March 2025 Benson Saulo, the Liberal candidate for Macnamara, pledged $520,000 for the installation of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in key hotspots.

UPDATE 15 APRIL 2025:

Labor candidate for Macnamara, Josh Burns has also committed funding of $1.5 million for the provision of CCTV across Port Phillip if elected.

The key benefits of CCTV installation can include enhanced public safety through the deterrence of criminal activities and quicker response to incidents. It can also aid in evidence collection by providing high-quality footage for use in investigations and legal proceedings by Police. Additionally, CCTV cameras boost community confidence by increasing the sense of security among residents, traders and visitors.

Over the past months, both community members and traders have expressed concerns about safety perceptions within our municipality. In response, there is a bipartisan commitment to providing essential funding for CCTV cameras in several high-risk areas. Funding contributions will complement Council's existing CCTV assets outlined in the image below. All CCTV in the public realm in Port Phillip will need to adhere to Council'sPublic Place Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) Policy.

There are clear signs erected in the areas where Public Place CCTV cameras operate.

Council remains dedicated to fostering a safe and inclusive community. We will continue to collaborate with federal and state governments, as well as the community, to support social cohesion, resilience, and programs that reflect the diverse needs of the City of Port Phillip.

Council looks forward to working closely with federal candidates of Macnamara and law enforcement agencies to implement these positive improvements.
