Here is an overview of outcomes from tonight's Ordinary Meeting of Tamworth Regional Council:
- Councillors tonight supported a recommendation to allocate $216,128.30 from the Waste Reserve to pay for credits to property owners incorrectly charged annual waste charges for green waste kerbside collection services they did not receive. A report to the meeting noted during a recent review of annual waste charges some property owners had been paying for services not received since the change of kerbside collection areas prior to the start of the 2022/2023 financial year. Property owners incorrectly charged will receive a letter and a credit on their rates notice against their waste charges.
- Councillors adopted the Tamworth Region Creative Communities Plan 2024-2029 which provides a clear framework for strengthening the region as a "thriving creative ecosystem" over the next 5 years. The draft document was on 28 days public exhibition from 29 May until 26 June 2024 and received no public submissions.
- Tamworth Region Public Art Strategy 2024/2025 to 2028/2029 was endorsed after Councillors reviewed feedback received during the 28-day public exhibition. Community feedback was positive with 15 comments received. The plan refers to the public art collection as an 'outdoor gallery' and aims to connect public art to our region and identity, create engagement with public art leading to community pride, history and storytelling.
- Councillors have endorsed a recommendation from the Tamworth Regional Council Heritage Working Group to investigate the possibility of issuing a clean-up and/or repair order to the owners of the former Regent Cinema building on the corner of Kable Avenue and Brisbane Street, Tamworth. The minutes of the working group's June meeting revealed the owner of the building has been in contact with Council and advised that a builder has been engaged to complete some repairs to the building's exterior and options to address problems related to pigeons roosting are being investigated. A report to tonight's meeting said the Heritage Working Group agrees the building is "a significant heritage listed building" which needs to be preserved.
- A draft Tamworth Region Museum and Archive Strategy will go on public exhibition later this week to seek community feedback. The draft strategy outlines a framework for the support of 10 public museum, archive and social history collections in the Tamworth region. It is intended to guide the development of each unique collection and to identify the most effective way for Council to support and resource the preservation of the region's heritage.
